Inter legend Francesco Toldo spoke with RMC Sport on a whole host of topics and firstly spoke on what he has got up to since retiring.
“I feel good even though it’s been almost eight years since I finished my career. I am part of the ‘Inter Campus’ and ‘Inter Forever’ projects. It is really nice as we entertain the fans and those less fortunate than ourselves, but Inter Forever is linked to the Nerazzurri of the past. There is a good relationship between those who have worn our shirt, even among the older ones for whom we always have a lot of respect.”
The former goalkeeper then spoke on what he thinks went wrong for Inter in the past few months and Inter manager Luciano Spalletti.
“Inter has always been bipolar: it wins many games and you think they are the strongest, then it suddenly stops. I think he [Spalletti] is a very normal person who knows a lot about football. I consider him perfect for Inter, but alone he can do little. He also saw those two months go by when, inexplicably, we all looked at each other without understanding what was happening. The bad period, however, I think has passed.”
There have been many rumours with regard to Inter redeeming Joao Cancelo and Rafinha and the 46-year-old gave his personal opinion on the duo.
“I can not answer these market questions. It is true that quality has risen exponentially [with thanks to them]. It is not only the player’s will that matters though as there are many variables that are a part of negotiations. However, I would like to see players wishing to wear the Nerazzurri shirt and stay at Inter at all costs.”
Toldo moved on to speak on club captain Mauro Icardi and his exclusion from the Argentina squad.
“Whenever he has half a chance he always scores. If I were Argentina, I would always take him, he is a real sniper. On the field and off it he is a captain, but I would also consider Handanovic who is a great professional. Mauro had a difficult time together alongside the whole team and bringing the band back together is not easy.”
He concluded the interview by heaping praise on Primavera manager Stefano Vecchi who has lead the Inter youngster’s to the final of the Viareggio Cup.
“He has been good for many years now. I believe that our youth sector is one of the best in the world. He wins and counts on gifted and powerful young people who are ready to fight for Inter.”
