Former Inter defender Francesco Colonnese believes it was just destiny that meant it was Stefan de Vrij who ended up playing a crucial part in Inter beating Lazio on the last day of the season.

“Lazio did not deserve to lose, but football is cruel. Lazio was playing better than the Nerazzurri, then nobody could have imagined what then happened,” he told RadioSei.

The 26-year-old defender, who is on his way to Inter this summer on a free transfer, gave away a penalty which allowed Inter to make the game 2-2 and gave them the confidence to go on and grab a third goal which secured a return to the Champions League upon the final whistle. Colonnese refused to slam the Dutchman like many others have for the role he played in his soon to be ex-employers defeat.

“I believe the boy when he says that he gave everything, but he was destined to change the game. His work was always honest and clean, he made his choices, they must be respected.”
