Inter vice president Javier Zanetti has stressed that the club are very happy with Mauro Icardi and want him to stay amid ongoing transfer rumours.

Speaking on Mediaset show ‘Tiki Taka,’ Zanetti was firstly asked about how he believes his native Argentina will get on at the World Cup that commences today with hosts Russia playing Saudi Arabia.

“There is great expectation and enthusiasm for the national team. We hope to get to the final, but I think it will be very difficult to win the World Cup but you never know. Everyone expects it to be Lionel Messi’s World Cup and he can win it, but it will be difficult because there are better equipped teams.”

Zanetti then moved on to discuss Icardi.

“I’m sorry that Icardi did not get to go to Russia because he deserved it. Mauro is happy in Milan and we are happy with him. He is very important to our project, after all he is our captain. There are no problems, we want him to stay and he too is happy to stay in Milan.”

Zanetti concluded the interview by revealing he rejected Real Madrid in favour of winning honours in the Inter shirt.

“I accepted to stay at Inter despite having the chance to go to Real Madrid because I wanted to stay to win with Inter.”
