Former referee Paolo Casarin has spoken on the usage of VAR or distinct lack of in some incidents over the weekend which saw the 2018/19 Serie A season commence.

“It was a normal day in the league with the usage of VAR limited only to clear cases that produces a series of controversies because they do not take into account all those cases that appeared on the field that were less clear and therefore obviously questionable.”

“Football has always been full of complex situations to be assessed by a single referee: the double referee, with technology for revisiting, was designed to cancel at least a part of the doubts.”

Casarin then spoke more specifically about an incident over the weekend that saw Inter’s Kwadwo Asamoah seemingly fouled in the box with no penalty awarded.

“Manganelli went in decisively on Asamoah. The foul on the Ghanaian embarrasses Mariani & Valeri approves. It was necessary to humbly go over athat incident again and then decide. To do nothing about was immature.”
