Ahead of former Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder’s final game for the Dutch national team, current Inter player and compatriot Stefan de Vrij has paid tribute to him.

“I am grateful for that assist at the 2014 World Cup, it will be something that will always remain with me. That tournament was the highlight of my international career,” de Vrij said in an interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“This goodbye also makes you realise that time flies and that you must also enjoy the beautiful things from time to time. On the other hand, things go like this, in life and in football. You deserve this goodbye and I am honoured to have been part of your career for a while.”

Sneijder announced that tomorrow’s friendly match with Peru will be his final match in the famous Oranje shirt which he has worn 133 times previously at senior level and just shy of 150 times across all age levels.
