Six years on from the last time Inter played at this level in Europe and with 5 minutes to go in the Nerazzurri’s first home game back in the Champions League the team looked lost, tired and toothless against Spurs. Then Pazza Inter decided to show up again. Two goals in 7 minutes meant Inter have their first home win in all compeitions since last season.
Samir Handanovic – 6.5: Made some good saves, was very unlucky on the goal and on another day that goes out for a goalkick or corner. Released the ball quickly tonight.
Milan Skriniar – 6.5: What can’t he do? That will be a mystery for sometime. Great defensive performance but he didn’t attack as much as Spalletti would have liked.
Stefan De Vrij – 7: Kane got more space playing on De Vrij’s side but Stefan controlled it for most of the time. Aerial presence from the corner resulted in the winner
Joao Miranda – 6.5: Stable defending as usual and gave it his all. What was not of quality is the ball movement and passing. Always seemed to prefer the long ball route.
Kwadwo Asamoah – 7.5: Imagine paying nothing for a wingback with so much experience, composure, quality and quantity. Rock solid in defence, pretty good in attack.
Matias Vecino – 6.5: Didn’t have his best games in midfield. His touch was always heavy. Lost too many balls and ruined many moves. But when it mattered he rose up.
Marcelo Brozovic – 7: Remember when Interisti were looking for a midfield general? Not anymore. Didn’t put a foot wrong tonight. Was on fire from minute 1 till the end.
Matteo Politano – 5.5: Poor game from Politano considering how much of the ball he had. Turned a few players but never got the final pass right. Ran himself tired by 60th minute.
Radja Nainggolan – 6: Radja’s game was full of hopeful passes. The team was not on the same wavelength as him. Won some 50-50’s and gave it his all as usual.
Ivan Perisic – 5.5: Not the Ivan we are accustomed to. He never looked dangerous for a sustained period of time. The world cup hangover is starting to show now.
Mauro Icardi – 6.5: Mauro ran himself into the ground at minute 84. Then Asamoah knocked a cross towards him. The goal was what Inter and Icardi needed. Inspired.
Antonio Candreva – 6: Candreva was brought on for an ineffective Perisic and didn’t really add much to Inter’s attacking threat. Spoiled a few moves but chased the ball down.
Keita Balde – N/A: Again not much time for us to judge Keita tonight but his pace is what Inter needed at that moment. Deserves a shot in a game on the wing soon.
Borja Valero – N/A: He had 5-6 minutes of action but was instrumental in keeping the pressure on a wilting Tottenham team. Added some composure and quality at the end.
Luciano Spalletti – 6.5: Got 2 out of 3 subs right. The attack is still not clicking together in place. But the game plan was right, great 3 points in spite of the injury issues.
Clement Turpin – 5.5: Only major mistake was not booking Vertonghen in the first half. Yes he gave a few soft free kicks away. Much better than what we saw recently.
Inter – 7.5: The performance doesn’t merit the rating. But the moral effect of that last ditch victory is exactly the tonic that was needed at Appiano Gentile.
Who do you think was Inter’s best player of the night?
