Gazzetta dello Sport have reviewed the performance of referee Paolo Mazzoleni in last night’s match between Inter and Fiorentina and came to the conclusion that he had a near perfect game in charge.
“On the 42nd minute, a cross from Candreva’s on the right hit Vitor Hugo, who just inside the penalty area, on his left hand. The touch is barely perceptible and it is difficult to actually change trajectory, but the intervention from VAR fits perfectly into the case. Mazzoleni, after having consulted with his colleague Irrati – Italy’s highest rated VAR operator – went to personally review the images for himself and awarded the penalty. The decision was not obvious but certainly fair.
The Milan based newspaper believe he made just the one key mistake and it concerned Inter defender Kwadwo Asamoah, who could well have found himself sent off if it was another referee.
“Asamoah, who was already booked, collided with Chiesa and risked being sent off for the challenge however Mazzoleni let him off with a warning and this is perhaps his only real mistake during the game.”
