In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport former referee Daniele Tombolini has backed calls in the media for managers to be given a chance to challenge a something on the pitch and call upon VAR.

“I am convinced that the time is right to make it happen. It would create a show within the show, it would reassure the teams, it would help the referees and it would be the completion of the VAR.

“This could be achieved by writing a sort of supplementary protocol for the VAR procedure. It would be clear and give teams the possibility to take advantage of a request of VAR, one in the first half and one in the second half.

“It would be up to the coach to call for it. If he was sent off it would be down to his assistant and then if somehow he was sent off too it would come down to the team captain.

“With the call of a coach, the referee would be forced to review the action, I am convinced that the referees would declare themselves available because with this addition their decisions are not diminished but they are implemented, silencing discontent and polemics.”
