Napoli striker Dries Mertens has spoken with Gazzetta dello Sport on how the Partenopei’s season has went so far and the race for the Scudetto.

“We are strong, Juventus are also going to be facing difficulties and we need to start taking advantage when they do. Other teams are also back and making a strong comeback, especially Inter. We have a very tough group in the Champions League, but we want to get past the group stages. We are running after the victory over Liverpool.”

The Belgian then revealed he could have left during the summer and talks over a new contract have not taken place.

“There was a possibility, but nothing was really taken into consideration. I’m happy in Naples, I’ve always said that I want to do well here, I have a contract until 2020.

“For now we have not talked about it, but I’m 31. Maybe some people forget this because I look younger, but I am an old man now…”
