Roma are in pole position to land Porto midfielder Hector Herrera in the January transfer window ahead of Inter among others according to a report from Corriere dello Sport.

Giallorossi president James Pallotta has given sporting director Monchi the green light to proceed with a move for the 28-year-old whose contract is up with the Portuguese giants in the summer. Despite being able to sign him to a pre-contract, Roma do not wish to take any risks and could sign him for around €15 million.

Their progression in the Champions League could play a huge part in any deal happening, especially if Porto were to fail to progress. Due to new rules introduced this season, players are no longer cup-tied and can play for a second club in European competition which could lead to the Mexican pushing for the move to the Italian capital.

Roma and Inter aside, Herrera is understood to have drawn interest from several Premier League clubs including Arsenal.
