Roberto Boninsegna has marked his 75th birthday by speaking on which player he sees himself most in and the difference between football when he played and what it is like nowadays.
“In football everything has really changed but if I had to give a name, I would say Icardi. He has an eye for goal, he always finds the right solution, he is powerful and while he certainly does not provide great movement, he makes up for that with charisma and ability,” he said in an interview with Il Giorno.
Asked how he thinks he would fare in modern football, he added; “I know I could have a lot of fun. Today it does not look like it used to as everyone now goes in to the box but a clever attacker can free themselves of their marker with certain movements. Today there is an incredible speed to the play, to the point that we are confused about roles and tactics when watching a game. In my playing days, we were more technical.”
