UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin has refused to rule out the possibility of VAR being implemented in this season’s European club competitions but there are still some problems to be overcome.
It was widely expected that it would be in place for next season 100% but his recent comments suggest that VAR could come sooner to the pitch side than many expected and might even be in place for the Champions League knockout stages, Gazzetta dello Sport speculate.
“I expect the report in a week or so and then we will see when we can implement it. At the latest next season,” European football’s governing body’s top man said.
Andrea Agnelli, the European Club Association chairman and Juventus president, also commented on the matter adding, “At the latest next season also means there is space for earlier implementation.”
Gazzetta have highlighted that one of the main problems is the fact that there is many different broadcasters which complicates things while they also state that being unable to have a centralised referee base, like there was at the World Cup in Russia, could prove troublesome.
