Rizzoli: “For VAR To Improve, You Need The Proper Pilots To Drive It Well”

Nicola Rizzoli, the referee designator for the AIA, the Italian referees association, has confirmed that changes can not be made to VAR Protocol in Italy unless both UEFA and Fifa agreed to change the rules that are followed by all the competitions that use the technology to aid their referees.

“Italy is within UEFA and Fifa, the protocol is international and there are things that can be done better.  Will they take advantage of the Italian experience? There are already arguments to do so. Then it is clear that the mistakes we have made are comparable to experimentation to get to the correct use of technology,” he explained in an interview with – Radio Rai Uno.

He went on to speak about how VAR can reach the level everyone wants to see it at.

“VAR is like a formula. To get to that desired level you have to study some improvements, then you will need to have the proper pilots to drive it well.”
