The decision to strip Mauro Icardi of the Inter captaincy was taken on Tuesday but was only communicated to the team on Wednesday morning, just hours before the tweet made it publicly known that he would lose the armband and be replaced by Samir Handanovic.

Respected transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio has explained the Nerazzurri’s reasoning behind doing this to the 25-year-old striker.

“The fact that Icardi was not called up for tomorrow’s game was a decision made by the management as a whole. The main concerns were about Icardi’s behaviour and his management in  his role as the captain. Icardi does not make his presence known in the locker room and hardly speaks to his teammates. The turbulent relationship between his wife and the club was also taken into account and was part of this decision.”

The Argentine has been with the club for almost six years and is widely regarded as one of the top strikers on the planet having netted some 122 goals in 210 appearances for the club in the time since.
