In the aftermath of Inter’s annoucement regarding Icardi’s captaincy, Tuttosport goes back in time, only slightly, to Luciano Spalletti’s time at Roma.

“It’s not new for Inter’s coach to be experiencing tensions with the clubs captain”. Remember the bad blood between himself and Francesco Totti. If Roma’s greatest ever icon is considered no threat to coach, then nobody is, certainly not Icardi.

The feud between Spalletti and Totti started way back in 2005-06 and got substantially worse when the tactician return to Roma in 2016, resulting in the shock expulsion of Totti from Trigoria in February of that year, after Totti bad mouthed Spalletti’s tactical choices in an interview. These spats continued throughout the year and into 2017 before Spalletti left Roma for Inter and Totti decided to retire. Interestingly, in the middle of the controversy, Totti’s wife Ilary Blasi, called the coach a “small man” in an interview. Not as bad as what Wanda as said but it’s a correlation.

It wasn’t only Totti but Daniele De Rossi also had his problems with the coach. The effects were nowhere near as bad but after Roma’s 0-3 defeat to Porto, which shockingly elimnated them from the Champions League, Spalletti gave the armband to Florenzi for a month. Showing that the tactician believes in the importance of it’s responsibility and it not unwilling to do the unorthodox.
