Gazzetta dello Sport have taken a look at the recent upturn in form of both Milanese clubs with both clubs now back where many believe they should be, competing at the top end of the table and in the Champions League spots.
Starting with fourth placed Milan, they are undefeated in their last six, winning four of those games and are now breathing right down the necks of their Nerazzurri cousins, Inter – who after a difficult start to the year, have seemingly found their form again.
The Milan based newspaper believe that this is down to one thing for each team: Solving the respective situation’s of their main striker’s.
In Milan’s case it was getting rid of Gonzalo Higuain. Chelsea took over Milan’s loan agreement with Juventus for the Argentine and they brought in Krzysztof Piątek to replace him. The Pole has certainly hit the ground running and has been central to Milan’s recent good form.
In Inter’s case it was dropping Mauro Icardi. Icardi was on a long goal drought and the already difficult situation was made worse by the recent comments of his wife/agent Wanda Icardi. Since Icardi – who was recently stripped of the Inter captaincy – began sitting out, Inter have won every game and the team spirit appears to have grown significantly in his absence.
