Legendary Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has shared his opinion on the ongoing situation between Inter and Mauro Icardi.

“The absence of Icardi has nothing to do with the bad defeat against Cagliari, but I am convinced that there have been many mistakes made in this whole Icardi saga and a solution needs to be found as soon as possible,” he said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“To remove the captain’s armband from Icardi and to say it publicly with a simple tweet was a very ugly gesture, because Mauro was embarrassed in front of all his fans, but evidently, if the club made this decision they will have had their reasons for doing so.

“Of course, Mauro did not have to miss a match, starting with the one in Vienna, but it is evident that his suffering was so bad that he did not wish to make himself available to play.

Altobelli was then asked who he thinks should make the next step to try and resolve the situation.

“I would say that the club need to call Icardi and do so as soon as possible in order to put things back to as they were and to start over.

“President Zhang has to be heard as soon as possible as there are millions of euros at stake here. I can not know what will happen from here to the end of the season but I do know that there are points still to be won to qualify for the next Champions League.

“Mauro has to go to the locker room and talk with his teammates. He has always been a great professional and he was punished for his wife’s words, he must go to his teammates and dissociate himself from what Wanda said. He must apologise and explicitly say that he does not think those things.
