Gazzetta dello Sport have examined the performance of referee Gianpaolo Calvarese in Inter’s 2-0 win over SPAL yesterday.

The Milan based newspaper believe that Calvarese made an early mistake by not booking Andrea Petagna. The SPAL striker hit Miranda in the face which resulted in the Brazilian suffering a broken nose but no card was given. Otherwise he got everything correct.

Gazzetta also examined the VAR decisions in the game.

A silent VAR check took place after a SPAL cross appeared to come off the arm of Marcelo Brozovic and this was the correct decision in the end.

VAR was also correct in disallowing Lautaro Martinez’s goal. Lautaro initially controlled the ball with his chest but then used his arm to help him control it further.

Another silent VAR check took place after Matteo Politano’s goal with it initially presumed there was a player offside although VAR proved that this was not the case.
