Corriere della Sera have examined the potential changes that could be made to continental competitions in Europe in the years to come.

The Milan based newspaper believe that the majority of these changes are being made for one reason and one reason only. Money.

One change could be moving Champions League football to the weekend. Currently games take place on Tuesday and Wednesday nights which mean there is a lot of potential audience lost, particularly in the Eastern part of the world, namely in Asia. A move to the weekend, at least from the quarter-final stage onward, would enable for an increased audience and in turn more revenue.

It can also not be excluded that the Champions League could become a super league of sorts that would have relegation as part of it. If the Champions League were to go down this route, which would include a promotion and relegation system, it would undoubtedly be worth much much more than the current 3 billion.

In the coming years a third continental competition will run in Europe under the provisional name of Europa League 2.
