Former Inter chief executive Ernesto Paolillo has given his thoughts on Inter manager Luciano Spalletti’s decision to not include Mauro Icardi in the squad for Inter’s loss to Lazio last night.

Icardi last played for the club on February 9 and only returned to full training with teammates at the beginning of last week.

Many expected the 26-year-old Argentine to be included in the squad but Spalletti announced that he would play no part due to a training incident understood to be related to Icardi’s lack of an apology to the team.

“The situation is a complex one. I hope that the manager has assessed the consequences of his choices. Fortunately, there is Marotta in the management, who will be able to make the necessary decisions,” Paolillo said in an interview with RMC Sport.

“For better or for worse, a coach must be free to call up whoever he wants for matches. Then if he makes the wrong choices, he pays the price for it.”
