Corriere dello Sport have attempted to work out what Luciano Spalletti with Lautaro Martinez seemingly set to make a return from injury in this weekend’s match against Frosinone.
Perhaps against Frosinone, Icardi will start again in order to ease Lautaro back into the squad after his injury, but then against Roma and Juventus, it will become clear who the true starter is.
Spalletti has already dropped hints at this and they all suggest that for the rest of the season, assuming he remains fit, Lautaro will be the starter, while Icardi will be resigned to the bench.
The Rome based newspaper recall Spalletti’s press conference prior to the Atalanta game when he was asked about Zapata’s injury, he responded by saying that he was also missing his striker, referring to Lautaro, despite Icardi’s presence.
Lautaro has established himself within the squad and for the coach he offers more to his style of play. Icardi was once unchallenged in his position but after weeks of sitting out, Lautaro was able to prove himself, but even after his return, Icardi’s attitude has seemed questionable. His exclusion against Lazio seemed petty at the time but now maybe it was purely a technical decision.
