Inter are battling it out with fellow Serie A side Sampdoria to sign Gremio defender Walter Kannemann according to a report from Brazilian radio station Radio Guaiba.

The 28-year-old Argentinian defender, who is contracted to the Porto Alegre club until the end of December 2022, holds dual Italian citizenship and therefore would not count against Inter or Sampdoria’s non-EU player registration quota should they sign him.

The report states that the Nerazzurri are ready to activate the €10 million release clause in his contract but Brazilian giants Gremio could try to quickly up that figure by signing Kannemann to a new contract.

This season, Kannemann, who joined his current employers from Mexican outfit Atlas in 2016, has made nine appearances across all competitions.

The five-time full Argentine international, who is naturally a centre back but also capable of playing at left back if required, has managed to contribute a single goal in 810 minutes on the park.
