Inter’s dream of bringing midfielder Mateo Kovacic back to the club could well become reality this summer, according to Tuttosport.
Kovacic is known to be one of Piero Ausilio’s favourite players ever to pass through the club, but CEO Beppe Marotta and head coach Antonio Conte are also fans of the Croatian.
Inter spoke with Real Madrid about the player when they visited the Spanish capital last week and want to sign Kovacic on loan with an option to buy.
To do so Kovacic would have to extend his contract with Los Blancos, to avoid Madrid getting him back next summer with only one year left on his deal, but that would be a formality.
Conte would be more than happy to sign Kovacic for Inter and has reserved very fond words of praise for the player in previous years.
In 2014 he said: “I like him a lot because he has stamina, courage and technique. He would have been a great inside midfielder in my Juventus side, capable of bursting through the middle of the pitch like few others in Serie A.”
Kovacic’s wages would not represent a stumbling block either, with the 25-year-old currently earning just €4 million in Madrid.
