Mauro Icardi would prefer a move to Roma over Napoli during the last month of the transfer window, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Giallorossi cannot guarantee Champions League football but made fresh contact with the striker and his entourage today.

Gianluca Petrachi is doing everything he can to secure a definitive ‘yes’ from Icardi, who has yet to make a clear decision on his future.

Inter would be delighted to send their former captain to the capital as it would allow them to secure Edin Dzeko in return.

The Nerazzurri are prepared to open formal talks with Roma once Icardi commits himself to a move, in a bid to reach an agreement on the players’ valuations.

Dzeko remains an important figure for new boss Paulo Fonseca but the Bosnian would be allowed to leave if Icardi moved in the opposite direction.

Inter want €55-60 million cash in addition to Dzeko if Roma offer a player-plus-cash deal.

The Giallorossi’s hierarchy view that request as excessive, but there is plenty of time for the clubs to negotiate before the window shuts on 2 September.
