Inter’s former head coach Gigi Simoni remains in a critical condition after being hospitalised in June, his wife Monica confirmed on Friday.
Simoni went into intensive care at Pisa’s general hospital after suffering an acute illness at his home on Viale Gabriele d’Annunzio.
Monica revealed her husband suffered a stroke two months ago and said it was still too early to say whether Simoni was on the road to recovery.
“I want to be completely honest, the situation remains difficult,” she told La Provincia di Cremona.
“My husband is still fighting with us and us with him every day, but his condition is still serious. This is where we are.
“You always have hope, although the overall picture remains delicate for the moment.”
Monica also thanked a group of supporters who traveled to pay tribute to Simoni in hospital recently.
“They brought him some heart-shaped balloons with messages of encouragement for Gigi, which we’ve placed in the waiting room.”
Simoni coached Inter during the 1997-98 season and led the club to victory in the UEFA Cup, delivering Massimo Moratti his first European title and earning him that year’s Panchina d’Oro award.
Inter finished second in Serie A behind Juventus in a controversial campaign, with Simoni decrying a grave injustice following the pair’s infamous head-to-head match in Turin.
