Mauro Icardi was accused of contradictory behaviour by Gazzetta dello Sport this morning after failing to attend Inter’s match against Lecce last night.
Antonio Conte’s side got off to the perfect start in Serie A thanks to goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Stefano Sensi, Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Candreva.
But Icardi and his wife and agent Wanda Nara were conspicuous by their absence, especially considering that Ivan Perisic, who recently left to join Bayern Munich, was in attendance.
“If it’s true, like Wanda says, that Icardi has rejected a series of offers because he wants to stay, then there’s something that doesn’t add up here, no?” Gazzetta wondered this morning.
“Icardi’s absence was made even more notable by the presence of two ex-Inter players in Perisic and Keita Balde, both of whom were essentially ‘discarded’ by Conte and the club.”
Icardi is not part of Inter’s plans this season and recently suffered the ignominy of having his no. 9 shirt taken away, which now belongs to his replacement in Lukaku.
But GdS still thought it was strange for him not to turn up, while Perisic, a player often criticised for his lack of attachment to the Inter shirt, was seen celebrating Brozovic and Sensi’s goals.
Keita was unable to earn a permanent move to Inter after scoring just five goals while on loan from Monaco last season.
The forward’s appearance at the Meazza was perhaps less surprising than Perisic’s, though, given he has always claimed to have a soft spot for Inter.
Keita visited Inter’s club offices on Monday to say some final goodbyes before he and his wife, who is expecting a child, took in his former teammates’ spectacular performance at San Siro.
