Milan city mayor Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Sala has called for clarity from Inter and Milan’s with regard to their plans to build a new stadium to replace San Siro.

“What I want is for the two clubs to better clarify the situation with regard to the new stadium. I believe that it will be necessary for them to show their plans to the public, otherwise the option between a new stadium and restructuring of San Siro will remain,” Sala said in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I hold San Siro close to my heart and if I do not see what the alternative is, it makes things difficult. I am therefore inviting the teams to have a very open and transparent meeting with me.

“On the one hand, the clubs have given us the documentation declaring their aims of the project for the new stadium and what will be happening around the stadium.

“We have taken note and what they are asking for is not in line with our rules but we will leave the final decision to the city council, who could make an exception to our standard rules.”

He was then asked if the new stadium must be owned by the city council.

“It’s not that the new stadium is owned by the council. The real problem is that today we have a stadium with a value of some tens of millions on the books. We need to find a formula where the courts cant come and ask if I have lowered the price of it.. This is an administrative issue that I believe can be sorted.”
