In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, legendary Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga spoke on a range of Inter related topics and firstly discussed whether Inter should be worrying after their false start in the Champions League by drawing with Slavia Prague.

“I am very sure that Inter will not have to worry. In this period we will play a lot, there have also been commitments with the national teams. Slavia Prague had nothing to lose and played a fantastic match,” he said.

“Antonio Conte was right, the performance would have been considered poor even in case of victory but I think the result is part of the growth process of a new team. Every now and then there will be mistakes.

Zenga then shared his views on Romelu Lukaku.

“I trust in Conte who wanted him so much and had asked for him at all costs. If Conte did this, it is because he sees Lukaku as the ideal player to score goals and give physicality to the team. Inter are lacking physicality and Lukaku can help out.

He was then asked if he thinks Inter could challenge for the title this season.

“Inter can fight for the title right away, in fact I’m convinced that they will do it. We will hardly see Inter perform exceptionally well but the spirit is different, the project is a winner and it is no coincidence that Conte signed for three years.”

He then spoke on this weekend’s Milan derby.

“The derby is a particular kind of match, it means more than the three points it can give you in the standings. The emotional aspect of the game is very watered down now though compared to the past as there is more foreigners in the teams.”

He also discussed the future of San Siro.

“San Siro means passion but when you look to the rest of the world you realise that to go on, we must move on. I have saw with my own eyes the incredible stadium’s of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Besiktas.”

He concluded by sharing his views on the Mauro Icardi saga.

“The club took a certain approach but they did not only do this for Mauro but also with Radja Nainggolan and Ivan Perisic.”
