Former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has shared his views following the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 loss in last night’s first Derby D’Italia of the season against arch-rivals Juventus.

Paulo Dybala gave Juventus an early lead before Lautaro Martinez drew things level from the penalty spot. Gonzalo Higuain scored in the final 10 minutes to give his side all three points which pushed them to the top of the table, at Inter’s expense.

“The first half performance was beautiful and exciting. Inter played very well. The second half was a bit more boring and Inter’s performance fell off a bit,” he said in an interview with Radio Anch’io Lo Sport.

“In order to win the title, all teams must play with continuity and in that respect, Inter have less than Juventus but must aspire to win the title even though the Bianconeri are very strong.

“Juventus have very strong foundations with thanks to all the work done by Max Allegri but last night they showed off some wonderful football. The second goal they scored was very nice. Sarri loves good football and can bring something different and new wherever he is.”

He then spoke on Inter manager Antonio Conte.

“I believe that with Conte there is the feeling linked to the fact that he is a professional with great strength and character.

“The coach has a big impact. It is clear that you must have a strong team, but the coach is very important for how he keeps the team together and with the decisions he makes and the players follow him.

“The arrivals of Barella and Sensi changed Inter a lot. They are giving the team a lot of personality and Inter are building something important. The personality of the team is built through the personality of individuals and Inter are starting to have important players.”

Next Moratti spoke on Romelu Lukaku and his performance against the Bianconeri.

“I think he still has to adapt to the Italian game, in England he was more aggressive. He has completely different characteristics to someone like Higuain. I don’t think they can be compared.”

He then shared his views on Mauro Icardi.

“Maybe I would have done things differently but I don’t know what happened. Yesterday, however, he would have been very useful. I think there was a controversy between the player and the club. Everyone was thinking of a different future.”

Moratti also discussed the performance of referee Gianluca Rocchi.

“Rocchi was very good. He refereed very well. The penalty was clear but you have to know how to see it. He was very good.”

He proceeded to laugh off Juventus’ latest attempt to have a Calciopoli verdict overturned.

“After so many years even the most desired resentment starts to fall, instead I see that they insist. They must find someone who knows absolutely nothing about it and who gives him reason, otherwise it is impossible for them to win.”

Next he spoke on the future of San Siro and the way supporting clubs has changed.

“A few years ago there were fewer people at the stadium and there could be an argument made to have a smaller stadium but now things are different. I remember my brother having a blue card, which was something I always loved and envied.

“A blue card meant a seat for life but perhaps things changed when we took over Inter. Now at the end of the season fans are asked if they wish to keep their seat so perhaps it is wise what the clubs are doing but there is less of a connection between fans and the club.”

He concluded the interview by discussing the importance of the Coppa Italia.

“The competition could bring good luck to Inter, it is important. I think it is an important sign for the club to start winning again be it just the Coppa Italia or the Supercoppa. Once you start to win, you have more motivation to pursue things that you have not yet won.”
