In today’s paper edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, they have reviewed the refereeing performance of Anthony Taylor in last night’s Champions League match between Inter and Borussia Dortmund, which Inter won 2-0.

Taylor for the most part called the game correctly. He and his assistants made the right decision when it came to Lautaro Martinez’s opening goal, which upon initial inspection looked offside but VAR checks proved he was onside.

He was then correct not to award Inter a penalty when Lautaro Martinez went down in the box after colliding with Manuel Akanji.

Taylor was however inconsistent when it came to punishing handballs. He awarded Borussia Dortmund a free kick after Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic was judged to handle the ball.

Soon after when a Dortmund player handled, Taylor did not give Inter a free kick and Brozovic shared his grievances with Taylor and because of this, he was given a yellow card. That was the first of seven yellow cards Taylor went on to hand out during the game – all of which, perhaps barring Diego Godin’s, were the right calls.

He then made no mistake in awarding Inter a penalty later on in the game when Sebastiano Esposito managed to get himself in front of Mats Hummels.
