Crucial game, great Champions League night, in a packed Signal Iduna Park and Inter went up within the first 300 seconds of the game and controlled the first half.
Then Vecino applied the cherry on the cake to send Inter fans dreaming about the next round of Champions League. All that came crashing down in the first 20 minutes of the second half as Dortmund summoned up all their pace, energy and creativity to push Inter into making mistakes that they usually don’t, especially under Conte.
Samir Handanovic – 5: Quality saves and movement especially towards the end of the first half. Then his team mates let him down big time. Couldn’t prevent the loss.
Milan Skriniar – 5: The booking was unavoidable, the first half was decent actually. Then when Dortmund attack with verve and pace, the defence crumbled to pieces.
Stefan de Vrij – 5: Looked solid in the first half, had absolutely no answer or know how to stem the tide in the 2nd half. Stefan didn’t manage to play the ball out at all.
Diego Godin – 5: Sturdy when Inter were on the front foot. Dortmund used the lack of pace in the defence to create problems and pushed hard enough to outscore.
Antonio Candreva – 5.5: Only let his man get past once in the first half. Got both assists. The second half was the exact opposite. Tried too much and forgot to mark his man.
Nicolo Barella – 6: Nicolo has a fantastic engine and the ability to read moves that help him win the ball back. Tonight he also was caught in possession way too often.
Marcelo Brozovic – 5.5: The worst kept secret at Inter is that Brozo is tired. That is still no excuse for his part on the Brandt goal. Brilliant in the first half, poor in the second.
Matias Vecino – 5.5: Vecino looked like another Conte win for some time and more depth in the squad. Still unable to hold the ball when under pressure/clutch moments.
Cristiano Biraghi – 4.5: Not his best moment. Struggled to look good when Inter looked good. Had no answers to Sancho and Hakimi who turned the flank into a highway.
Lautaro Martinez – 6.5: Another night, another goal. Chased what looked like a lost cause and opened up the game for Inter. The only player who cant be faulted tonight.
Romelu Lukaku – 5: Was involved in a lot of the moves in the first half. Then Inter were unable to move the ball to the attacking half and Romelu became ineffective.
Valentino Lazaro – 6: Showed why Conte was patient for him. Came on during a very tough moment and held his own in both phases. Managed to create 2-3 chances.
Stefano Sensi – 5.5: Unable to win the ball or stop player running by him. Looked like he was off the pace a bit, understandably. High standards set previously don’t help.
Matteo Politano – 6: Turned his ankle seconds after coming on. Took the best part of 15 minutes to get back to speed. Not much to write about Matteo due to the injury.
Antonio Conte – 4.5: As is customary now, the substitutions should have come before Dortmund equalized. The second half was the worst performance this season by far.
Danny Makkelie – 7.5: Let the game flow on. Didn’t miss a beat and didn’t fall for any soft fouls or tricks by both teams. Kept control of the game. Brilliant referee.
Inter – 4.5: Being Pazza is part of Inter’s DNA and no amount of coaching can help that. Inter have grown up but tonight shows that there is a lot more left to do.
