Head Serie A designator Nicola Rizzoli discussed VAR and its usage in Italy in a speech at the forum of referees and captains organised by the Italian football federation today, with Italian news outlet ANSA noting his words.

“VAR was not born to eliminate errors, but to restore credibility to the most beloved sport. This must be our common goal, without forgetting that some innovations have not yet been fully finalised.”

“Remember that VAR came into force only in 2018, while Italy experimentally introduced it in 2017. In short, this is only the third season and will certainly improve.”

The usage of VAR both in Italy and abroad has become a widely talked about topic, with some fans and pundits praising its increased clarification for referees, allowing them to make more consistent decisions, whilst others say that it’s not used properly or slows down the game too much.

It was used in the World Cup for the first time last summer, to great success.
