In their analysis of Inter’s 3-1 win over Slavia Prague in the Champions League in today’s print edition, Il Giornale have expressed doubts about how VAR was used during the game in the Czech capital.

Referee Szymon Marciniak was forced to consult VAR near the end of the first half at the Sinobo Stadium. The consultation came immediately after Romelu Lukaku looked to have given Inter a 2-0 lead.

Marciniak had been advised to take a look at a penalty incident which happened moments before Lukaku scored. Upon examining the footage, he awarded Slavia Prague with a penalty which in turn saw the Belgian’s goal chalked off.

Il Giornale have doubts over whether what resulted in the penalty actually was a penalty and also about VAR in general due to the fact play had been allowed to go on for so long and even a goal scored before things were pulled back. The report notes that whilst there are regulations in place, each official seems to interpret them differently.
