Milan city mayor Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Sala has shared his hopes for San Siro to still be standing in 2026 so it can continue to be the opening ceremony venue for the Italian winter Olympic games.
“The official venue for the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina winter Olympic games is San Siro and I hope that San Siro will still be there in 2026,” he is quoted as saying by Italian news agency ANSA at today’s IOC seminar.
Inter and AC Milan, the current inhabitants of the 80,018 capacity stadium, recently announced plans to move out and build a new state-of-the-art stadium.
As part of their plans, the Nerazzurri and Rossoneri clubs made it clear that they wished to demolish San Siro to make way for hotels, offices and commercial spaces among new things as part of the new stadium project.
They have however faced a lot of criticism for this and they have held several meetings with the council in a bid to work out an amicable solution that will suit all parties.
