The clause which allows Lionel Messi to free himself from Barcelona can only be invoked for him to join a team in a minor league according to a report from Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo.

The 32-year-old Argentine international’s future with the club is seemingly uncertain, so much so that there is now believed to be a chance that Messi may use this clause which allows him to leave the Catalan side for nothing in June so long as he gives 30 days notice.

Reports in Italian media and media elsewhere in the world have suggested that several big clubs including Inter are keeping a close eye on the situation but this report would appear to suggest it is pointless for them to do so.

The report states that the clause is essentially the one that both Xavi and Andres Iniesta had in their contracts with Barcelona which allowed them to leave for nothing to join Al Sadd in Qatar and Vissel Kobe in Japan respectively.
