In today’s print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport have criticised Gianpaolo for his sometimes harsh refereeing during last night’s Coppa Italia semi final first leg between Inter and Napoli at San Siro.
Calvarese, in the eyes of the Milan based newspaper, was particularly harsh when it came to booking Inter centre back Milan Skriniar in just the third minute after his tackle on Napoli starlet Eljif Elmas. This then left Skriniar walking on thin ice for the remainder of the first half and presumably the reason he was substituted at half time.
Just before the half hour mark of the game, Napoli central midfielder Diego Demme swept Inter striker Lautaro Martinez’s legs for him and it should have been a yellow card but Calvarese kept his card in his pocket.
On the hour mark, Inter wing back Cristiano Biraghi went down in the box after taking Jose Callejon’s elbow to his face. Calvarese should have taken a look at the situation on the VAR monitor but did not do this.
Shortly after this Demme and Kostas Manolas both went through Lautaro Martinez and at least one yellow card should have been brandished but once again Calvarese kept his cards to himself.
The report concludes by giving him some praise for not giving Inter a penalty at the end of the match. Danilo D’Ambrosio went to ground far too easily after the slightest of touches from Elmas.
