In an interview with Italian football show Pressing, legendary Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga reflected on the team’s performance in their loss to Lazio last night.

Inter led at the half time interval with thanks to Ashley Young scoring his first goal for the club since his January arrival but Inter failed to hold onto their lead and lost 2-1 with Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic getting on the score sheet for the hosts.

“It is evident that the small details made the difference in this match. Inter were not as brilliant as they have been in the past and it was the same against Napoli. I don’t agree with the idea that Inter are not a great team, the league is still wide open,” the former Italian national team shot-stopper remarked in the interview.

Zenga then discussed the criticism that Daniele Padelli has come in for during his time as the deputy to Inter number one Samir Handanovic.

“Inter did not lose because of Padelli’s mistake. He was perhaps stood too tall which made it difficult for him to get down low quickly. Perhaps his years of absence from the pitch have led to him reading things wrongly.”

He then went on to admit that Inter should have been able to do more in the matches after their emphatic comeback win in the recent Derby della Madonnina: “If you win a derby 4-2, it is true that you use up a lot of energy but you should have enough adrenaline to do more after it.”

Zenga spent no less than 16 years with the Nerazzurri between 1978 and 1994, in which time he made just shy of 500 appearances across all competitions. He is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers the club have ever had.
