Napoli have confirmed that Dries Mertens’ condition will be reassessed in the coming days after he picked up an ankle injury.

The 32-year-old Belgian striker sustained the injury during last night’s Champions League knockout match versus Barcelona, in which he scored and became Napoli’s joint top goalscorer in club history alongside Marek Hamsik with 121 goals.

Mertens condition was assessed earlier on today by the club’s medical staff as the Azzurri club began their preparations for this weekend’s Serie A match at home to Torino. The tests highlighted that he had suffered a strong knock to his ankle.

It now remains to be seen whether or not Mertens will not only recover in time for the match against Torino but also the Coppa Italia semi final with Inter next mid-week.

Mertens absence would sure be a big blow to Gennaro Gattuso with Mertens have scored 12 goals and assisted five goals in 28 appearances this season.
