Italian government minister for sport and youth policies Vincenzo Spadafora has blasted those responsible for taking so long to postpone sporting events.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) recently ordered that all sporting events, including Serie A football, must be postponed until at least April 3.

As a result, there will be two rounds of Serie A matches postponed and finding dates for these games will prove particularly difficult with the calendar already rammed full between now and May 24 – the date the season should end although reports suggests the Italian football federation are looking into possibly extending the season by a week.

Spadafora, who has served in his current position since the Summer of 2018 is of the belief that the decision came far too late and accused the decision makers of putting the financial side of things before the players health and safety.

“It seems an understatement to say it took too long for sports to be stopped. Football did not want to take its responsibilities,” he remarked in an interview with Italian broadcaster Tg LA7 earlier on today.

“Now they say that the government should take measures, when in reality many federations have taken them autonomously. The only ones that have not done this is Lega Calcio for economic reasons.”
