Piero Sandulli, the president of the Italian football federation sports appeals court, has discussed the current extraordinary situation and possible complications to come.

Due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, all Italian sporting events have been put on hold until at least April 3 and the country is currently on lock down with people ordered to stay home by the government to stop the spread of the disease.

Most Serie A clubs have 12 games to play whilst there are some who still have 13 games left. The likelihood of the season finishing when expected is highly unlikely and there have been a number of suggestions in the media about ways in which the season could be finished.

“I think I speak for all sports judges when I say that I feel for all of the professional and amateur athletes who are unable to play,” he began an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

Next he spoke on whether he thinks teams should be allowed to train during this crisis situation.

“The latest government decree allows for players to train however at this moment but nobody is immune to the disease, a Sampdoria doctor has been infected.”

He then went on to discuss the Lega Serie A’s ambition to see out the remainder of the season.

“I think we all hope that the season will be finished. When things go back to normal again, we will start talking about football again but now we must think about more prevalent issues such as health, human relationships and solidarity.”

He was then asked about the possibility of the league having to be stopped entirely due to Coronavirus.

“We all want to hurry back to normal life and we hope that the season can be concluded by June 30th. Let us pray that that will happen.

“The country needs to recover from an economic point of view. Otherwise, all the federations, and not only football, will have to deal with this eventuality. I am confident sport can be resurrected around Easter.”

In conclusion he spoke on the potential complications that could arise from having to extend seasons possibly even past June when some players contracts will expire.

“There would be contractual constraints that need to be overcome at the end of the season. It is a complex matter that needs be studied.

“For this reason, the law of sports professionalism will have to be rewritten and provide for everything that is missing.”
