Former Inter Goalkeeper Sebastien Frey has shared his belief that current Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic is the best goalkeeper in Italy at the moment.

Handanovic has been with Inter since the Summer of 2013 and has been virtually ever present for the side and perhaps most importantly ever reliable for the Nerazzurri.

“Who is the best goalkeeper in Italy? I would say Samir Handanovic of Inter. He is someone who guarantees safety and is one of the leaders of one of the greatest teams in Italy,” Frey explained in an interview with fanpage.it.

He then went on to discuss other goalkeepers who he thinks are good.

“After Handanovic, I would say Gigio Donnarumma of AC Milan, who after a small decline, is showcasing his qualities again. Next I would say Napoli’s Alex Meret.”

Next the Frenchman, who has turned 40-years-old today, spoke on the best defenders currently in Italy: “Milan Skrinar and Stefan de Vrij of Inter and Matthijs de Ligt of Juventus. They would make a nice defence together.”

Frey was then asked which game from his career he would replay if given the opportunity to.

“Without a doubt I would replay the Milan derby which we lost 6-0. It was such a strange game. We never turned up in that game and that is why I pick this one. Maybe we would lose it again but probably not in that manner.”

Frey then discussed his arrival at Inter and then his departure to Parma after three years on the club’s books.

“Inter brought me to Italy and, as they say, you never forget your first love. I have great respect for the club as they believed in me when I was a youngster and made me become the person that I have.

“My move to Parma? I decided to leave Inter because at the time there was a lot of confusion from a management point of view and I did not feel like they were taking on all of their responsibilities. I needed more peace of mind to grow so I decided to go to Parma.”

In conclusion, he was asked who he thinks the greatest goalkeeper in Inter’s history is.

“Inter have always had excellent goalkeepers, before me there was Pagliuca who had a great personality, he was a great goalkeeper. Then I was there, then Toldo arrived who did extraordinary things and then Julio Cesar who must be placed at the top of the list because he won the treble.

“You cannot underestimate Handanovic though. In recent years he has proven to be a silent leader and he is giving a lot to this Inter.

“To choose just one is difficult but for me Julio Cesar is the one who has won the most so he certainly deserves to be in first place.”

During his time with the club, Frey, who also played for Fiorentina, Genoa and Bursaspor in his career, made 47 appearances across all competitions, in which he kept 14 clean sheets.
