Legendary Inter midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has spoken on the current situation in Milan due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.
“I am trying to let my family in Argentine know what we have experienced and they have the advantage of time and I hope that will be of help to them. There they have blocked everything much earlier and have not reached the same amount of infected and deaths that we have had here,” he admitted in an interview with Italian football journalist Pierluigi Pardo which was broadcast on Pardo’s official Instagram profile.
“Today I was talking about it with a friend of mine, I live in a street with many cars. When you go out into the garden to play with the children, you only hear ambulance sirens.
“It is a feeling of absolute sadness. Going to the supermarket you find yourself displaced, a situation you would not wish on anyone.”
He then spoke on his footballing idol when he was growing up.
“I was still small when Diego Maradona did great things for the national team. The first World Cup that I can remember was 1990, Caniggia and Diego were fantastic there. I would also say Fernando Redondo, I dreamed about him at night.”
He was then asked when he understood that he was going to do something in football.
“You never understand it. You go your own way, you don’t stop to think. I did what I had to do and I enjoyed my career. I was lucky to do what I did.
“I do not feel like a hero when there are people working in hospitals around the clock right now. It is our responsibility not to forget the doctors when we are not in trouble anymore.”
Cambiasso joined Inter in the Summer of 2004 from Spanish giants Real Madrid and he would go on to spend a total of ten years on the clubs books.
The midfielder, who won 52 caps for the Argentine national team during his playing career, made a total of 431 appearances across all competitions in his time with Inter.
He scored 51 goals and provided his teammates with 34 assists and won no less than 15 trophies for the club, including the Champions League in the 2009/10 season which formed part of a historic treble win.
