The renewal of Dries Mertens’ contract with Napoli looks further away, with Inter waiting to sign him on a free transfer in the summer, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how the 32-year-old Belgian midfielder met with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis 40 days ago to discuss a new contract, with an agreement seemingly close.

Since then, the Coronavirus emergency has put a total stop to Italian football and Mertens is unhappy with the response of the club.

The Belgian striker isn’t impressed with Napoli’s choices regarding the salary cuts, the report continues, as well as the lack of agreement on the fines for the players’ mutiny earlier this season.

The possibility of him leaving on a free transfer in the summer now seems high, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all keen on him. Inter are hoping to fight off the competition for his signature.
