The presence of Franco Baldini at Roma could convince Jan Vertonghen to join them over other interested Italian clubs according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

Baldini is the former technical director at Vertonghen’s current employers Tottenham Hotspur and the Italian is now a consultant for Roma president and owner James Pallotta.

Vertonghen’s current contract with the north London based club is due to expire in a matter of weeks and as a result a number of clubs have shown an interest in signing him up on a free transfer.

With it looking increasingly unlikely that Chris Smalling will stay, Roma have identified Vertonghen as someone who could replace him whilst the former Ajax defender has also been linked with both Inter and Napoli too.

This season the 33-year-old has made 26 appearances across all competitions to date. In 2151 minutes on the park, he has scored two goals and tallied a single assist.
