Napoli’s leadership are refusing to give up hope when it comes to keeping a hold of Dries Mertens despite the fact that time is running out according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

Mertens current deal with the club is due to expire at the end of next month and there has been a lot of clubs who have shown an interest in signing him on a free transfer.

Despite the interest from elsewhere and the fact that some clubs, including Inter, have even extended contract offers to the 33-year-old Belgian national team player, Napoli maintain their belief that they will manage to reach an agreement with Mertens to extend his stay in the south of Italy.

The report goes on to explain that Inter and Chelsea’s offers are tempting Mertens, who has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date this term, in which he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists.
