Italian football journalist Enzo Bucchioni has claimed that Inter are closing in on the signing Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

Mertens contract with Napoli is due to expire at the end of next month and as per Bucchioni, Inter have convinced Mertens to team up with compatriot Romelu Lukaku in Milan.

The final details need to be ironed out and the 33-year-old will arrive at the Nerazzurri club even if Lautaro Martinez, who continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona, stays put at the club.

“Inter have convinced Mertens to team up with his compatriot Lukaku. We are at the final details and the Belgian, whose contract is expiring with Napoli, will arrive, even if Lautaro will remain,” Bucchioni wrote in his latest editorial piece for Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

Mertens, who is Napoli’s joint top all-time goalscorer, has been with the Stadio San Paolo club since a 2013 move from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

In the time since he has went on to make 311 appearances across all competitions to date in which he has scored 121 goals and provided a total of 73 assists for his teammates.
