Inter lead Chelsea in the race to sign Belgian striker Dries Mertens, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

The report details how the 33-year-old Belgian forward, whose contract expires with Napoli at the end of the season, declined a large offer from China in recent days, instead preferring to join a club that is fighting for trophies.

Mertens has already rejected other offers, the report continues, including Monaco. Chelsea remain interested but are behind the Nerazzurri in the race for his signature. The 33-year-old Belgian is set to leave Naples after seven years in the Campania capital.

Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1787 minutes. In that time, he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists. Napoli are keen to try and keep the player, but it seems as if he wants a change of scenery in the twilight of his career.
