Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin discussed Napoli forward Dries Mertens and if he’ll join Inter in the summer in an interview with Italian broadcaster TeleLombardia aired earlier today.

“We are close to a point that, in my opinion, the deal is almost complete. From now until the end of the season no one will ever say it officially, for reasons that are self evident. It’s like the de Vrij situation two years ago.

“Contract filed? I don’t know. How happy would I be? In the past I wrote that I would have liked to have him at Inter, he’s one of my favourite strikers. Should that happen, I’d be very happy.”

Inter are looking to sign the 33-year-old Belgian striker in the summer on a free transfer, after his contract expires with Napoli.

The Nerazzurri only have one forward who is confirmed for next season, Romelu Lukaku, as the other players in the department have uncertain futures. Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez will return to Manchester United, Sebastiano Esposito is set to be sent out on loan and Argentine star Lautaro Martinez could still be sold to Barcelona.

Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1787 minutes. In that time, he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists. The player has spent the last seven years of his career in Naples and has scored 121 goals and provided 73 assists for the Partenopei in that time.
