In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, former Inter defender Walter Samuel discussed a range of Inter related topics and started by speaking on current Inter manager Antonio Conte.
“I met Conte when he played, he seems to me to be a strong manager with very clear ideas,” he began the interview which appeared in yesterday’s print edition.
Samuel then went on to discuss what it was like to work under former Inter manager Jose Mourinho, who led the club to their greatest ever success, the treble win in the 2009/10 season.
“I got on well with him, he showed me that he believed in me and always made me play. He managed to get the most out of every player.”
Next the former Basel defender spoke on legendary former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti and his relationship with him.
“When needed, he was close to the team. I have beautiful memories of him. Moratti has done a lot for Inter, he will miss football but has taken many satisfactions away from it and I’m happy about this. The relationship with him was beautiful, he treated us like we were his own children. He is a great person.”
Samuel then spoke on former Inter and Argentine teammate Javier Zanetti, who is now vice president of Inter after playing for the club for just shy of twenty years.
“He knew that this would happen. He began to prepare, he studied and the experience he has will help him a lot. It is one thing to play and another to be part of the management. I am very happy for him.”
In conclusion he reminsiced about some of the top players that he was able to play alongisde during his spells with both Roma and Inter as well as the Argentine national team.
“I was lucky enough to play alongside many. I played with Messi in 2010 in South Africa, at Roma there was Totti, Batistuta, Balbo, Aldair and Cafu and then many others at Inter such as Ibrahimovic, Milito, Eto’o and Zanetti. It was a pleasure for me to play with them.”
