Inter Speed Up Pursuit Of Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen As Roma Cool Their Interest

Inter have sped up their pursuit to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Il Messaggero.

The Belgian national team player’s contract with the Premier League club is set to expire at the end of this month and Inter are seemingly looking to wrap up a deal for him soon.

Roma have also shown a keen interest in signing him as of late but the report from the Rome based news outlet goes on to explain that the Giallorossi club have cooled their interest due to the fact they are close to reaching an agreement with Manchester United to extend Chris Smalling’s loan with the club.

33-year-old Vertonghen, who has been with Spurs since the Summer of 2012, has made 26 appearances across all competitions to date this term, in which he has scored two goals and provided one assist.
